~ Trees & Woodland ~

Cornworthy Parish is lucky enough to have some of the most beautiful ancient woodlands in the area - filled with oaks and hazel and an abundance of native trees and bushes.

Local woods include :

  • Capton Woods
  • Charleycombe Woods
  • Kirkham Woods
  • Big Wood ...

It is said that the word 'Dart' is an ancient word meaning 'oak', which explains the large numbers of oak trees which can be seen lining the River Dart today ... for it is in fact 'the River of the Oaks'.

If anyone would like to add more about the history of the woodlands in the Parish, please be in touch.
