Welcome to Cornworthy

Family History - William LANE

Thursday, 12 February 2015

My 2x great grandparents came from Cornworthy. They were William LANE born in 1773, and his wife Ann. William's parents were, I think, Thomas LANE and Mary HARRIS.

I had never heard of Cornworthy until, whilst doing a fairly complicated search, I found a military discharge paper for William LANE. He was in the Duke of York's Grenadier Foot Guards for 20 years, but become ill with Asthma so could not continue to serve. This search then progressed to William seeking admittance for his son Adam Charles LANE to enter the Duke of York's Military Asylum. This was granted and Adam was taken into the establishment in 1817 at the age of 8yrs. Apparently the LANE family are of special interest to this academy.

Although I am using ancestry to research my forebears, it seems not to have many records of smaller parishes in Devon.
I would be most grateful for any advice or help to point me in the right direction.
My very best wishes to all in Cornworthy.

Bridget Holley.
