Posters \nwere displayed in the Parish, asking people, if interested, to apply and\n within a short time nineteen letters had been received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Begins to grow<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cornworthy Allotment Association was established on 28th January \n2009, with a Founding Committee of six, who met in the Hunter\u2019s Lodge \nInn, Cornworthy. The aim was to provide allotments for local people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In the land<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2009 the Parish Council made a valiant attempt to secure a \npiece of land for the allotments but there was great disappointment when\n this Tender application was unsuccessful. However, by the summer, a \nmore positive mood was afoot, with the generous offer of land from a \nlocal landowner, and in September a private agreement was signed. The \nsite is good growing land and picturesque with stunning views of \nDartmoor, the River Dart and out to sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>With hands<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By October the work really started and the site was ploughed, \nharrowed and sectioned off into twenty full or half sized plots. Local \nfarmers gave us help with the loan of equipment\/expertise and by mid \nOctober all of the plots had their first tenants. Some of the holders \nhad experience in growing crops but many were complete novices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>With heads<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By January 2010 Planning Permission for the erection of a communal \nshed and composting lavatory was granted and the spring brought us grant\n funding from South Hams District Council, Devon County Council, Devon \nCommunity Foundation and South Devon Coastal Local Action Group. These \nfunds, gratefully received, have helped provide the site infrastructure \nwhich includes a communal garden shed, composting lavatory, straw bail \nurinal, rain water harvesting system and a borehole. By the winter of \n2010 we had achieved a fully sustainable allotment site with disabled \nassess to all the facilities. The second season brought an increasing \ndemand for allotments and we put in three extra plots to accommodate \nthis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And with hearts, over time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today there is a great sense of pride and achievement with our \nallotments. The novice growers have received a lot of support and \nencouragement from the more experienced so we all grow together. Fame \ncame our way in May 2011 when Devon Life Magazine told the World about \nCornworthy allotments. <br>15th June 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/books.simonandschuster.co.uk\/Perfect-Plot\/Kim-Sayer\/9781849838337\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cornworthy.com\/cwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/gardeners-world\/allotment-association\/the-perfect-plot.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Easter Saturday, April 2012 saw the launch of a book about our  allotments called The Perfect Plot. The book is beautifully illustrated  with photographs by Kim Sayer and forward by gardening expert Christine  Walkden. The book tells the story of how to set up an allotment and  there are lots of growing tips as well.
